What age can a child start learning to code?
By Abdellah El Ghazi, computer science teacher and founder of TeamElGhazi
Short answer: most children can start programming around age 8, as soon as they read without effort, using a block-based language like Scratch. Typed code (Python, or C++ to drive an Arduino robot) becomes realistic between 10 and 12; before 8, logic games are all they need.

"He's 9 and spends hours on video games. Is this the right time to sign him up for coding?" Parents ask us some version of this every week, both in Casablanca and from abroad. There is no magic age, but there are clear signals. Age matters less than three abilities: reading instructions alone, staying focused on one problem for about half an hour, and being willing to get it wrong and try again.
Coding milestones by age
Under 8: logic without a keyboard
Five- and six-year-olds already practice the logic behind programming: following a sequence of steps, sorting objects by a rule, guiding a blindfolded friend ("two steps, turn left"). If you want something on a tablet, the free ScratchJr app, built for ages 5 to 7, lets them snap picture blocks together with no reading required. A formal class adds little at this stage.
Ages 8 to 10: block-based coding
This is the sweet spot for Scratch, the visual language created at MIT and used in classrooms worldwide. Kids drag blocks such as "move 10 steps" or "if on edge, bounce" and see their character react instantly. With no typos to hunt down, they focus on the concepts that matter: loops, conditions, and variables like a score or a life counter. By the end they have built a real little game they can show the family.
Ages 10 to 12: things that move, and first real code
Around 10, many kids want their program to do something in the physical world. Arduino robotics delivers exactly that: a blinking LED, a sensor that spots an obstacle, a small robot that steers around it. They write their first lines of simplified C++ because the robot won't move otherwise. It is also a good age to discover what artificial intelligence really is through play, with a very simple chatbot or a color sensor.
12 and up: typed code
A teenager who is comfortable on a keyboard can move to a text-based language such as Python or start building 3D games. They can now read error messages and look up a fix on their own. If they did Scratch first, the switch is quick: they already understand loops and conditions and only need to learn how to write them.
Five signs your child is ready
- They can read two or three sentences of instructions without help.
- They love building things: Lego, step-by-step drawings, games where you design your own levels.
- They ask "how does this work?" about a game or an app.
- They can fail an attempt and try again without giving up.
- They can stay focused on one activity for around 30 minutes.
Three out of five is enough to get started. The rest usually develops through practice.
What to check before you enroll
- Does your child actually make something? A good class ends with a game, an animation or a robot your child built. Watching videos is not learning to code.
- Is the content right for their age? An 8-year-old facing typed code tunes out fast; a 13-year-old repeating Scratch gets bored.
- Is the screen time productive? An hour designing a game is nothing like an hour playing one. Ask how much of each session is hands-on.
- Is your child's data protected? No public account in their name, no photos published without your consent.
Our coding classes for kids in Casablanca, by age
At TeamElGhazi, the Junior program is for ages 8 to 14. Here are the classes, the recommended age and the price listed on each course page.

| Class | Age | Format | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scratch for Kids | 8-11 | Online, 1 month | 1,100 MAD |
| Digital Creation Workshop | 8-14 | In person, 2 weeks | 1,300 MAD |
| AI Genius School | 10-14 | In person | 1,000 MAD |
| Arduino Maker Robotics | 10-14 | In person | 1,500 MAD |
| Coding Club | 11-14 | In person | 1,300 MAD |
| 3D & Video Game Academy | 12-14 | 2-week camp | 1,700 MAD |
For a first step at 8 or 9, Scratch for Kids is taught online, so your child can join from home anywhere, and ends with a complete story game. From 10, Arduino Maker Robotics has them build an obstacle-avoiding robot, while AI Genius School introduces artificial intelligence through games. Kids aged 11 to 14 who have already tried coding move forward in the Coding Club.
What about after 14? A motivated teenager can join our beginner tracks, such as Python Fundamentals (1,000 MAD, six weeks, live online). Our guide How to learn Python from scratch in Morocco walks through the steps.
The bottom line
Don't wait for the "perfect" age. Look instead at whether your child reads independently, enjoys building and can handle mistakes. Start with blocks around 8, move to robots or typed code around 10 to 12, and always pick a class where they leave with something they created. Not sure which class fits? Send us your child's age and interests through the Contact page and we'll give you an honest recommendation. Our center is at 26 rue Nahas Nahoui, Maarif, Casablanca. More answers are in our FAQ.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best age to start programming?
Around 8, once a child reads comfortably, they can start with a block-based language such as Scratch. Typed code (Python, or the C++ used with Arduino) usually comes between 10 and 12, depending on patience and keyboard skills.
My child is 6. Is that too early?
For a structured class, usually yes. At that age, screen-free logic games, card-based robots or the free ScratchJr app are plenty. Our Junior workshops start at 8.
How much do TeamElGhazi's coding classes for kids cost?
From 1,000 MAD (AI Genius School) to 1,700 MAD (3D & Video Game Academy). Scratch for Kids is 1,100 MAD for one month online, the Coding Club and the Digital Creation Workshop are 1,300 MAD, and Arduino Maker Robotics is 1,500 MAD.
Are the classes online or in Casablanca?
Scratch for Kids is taught online. The Coding Club, AI Genius School, Arduino Robotics and the Digital Creation Workshop take place in person at our Maarif center in Casablanca; the 3D & Video Game Academy runs as a two-week camp.
